Braves announce early signees

Carrollton, Ga. – November 18, 2004 – With Thanksgiving approaching, West Georgia volleyball has plenty to be thankful for from the 2004 season. But it doesn’t stop there, as Wednesday head coach Amy Draper announced the signing of two stellar recruits for the 2005 season.

“With our great year this year, we are beyond recruiting to try to get to the conference tournament,” Draper said. “Our goal is for regionals and beyond and we are getting the talent it takes to get there.”

The first is a player not far from the heart of the 2004 team. Carolin Schoeneck, sister of West Georgia junior outside hitter Kathi Schoeneck has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Braves in 2005.

The younger Schoeneck brings a Division-1 level player to the West Georgia roster. At 6-2, she will be one of the tallest players on the team and is devastating offensively. At Bevill State Community College in 2004, Schoeneck had 536 kills in 33 matches at a 35 percent clip. She eclipsed the 30-kill mark in three matches during the season and had just nine matches where she didn’t get into double figures in kills.

The next player is Amber Barnlund, a 6-1 middle blocker from Bourbonnais, IL. Barnlund is a highly decorated freshman, competing for both Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School as well as the Ultimate Volleyball Club, an elite team out of Illinois. She has been a member of several National invitation-only tournaments and will bring more power to West Georgia’s middle.

Starting with a class like this, the 2005 season could be even more magical than 2004.
