Michael Cooney
Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations

West Georgia’s human dynamo, Michael Cooney, is back for another season as the Braves’ Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations. In that capacity, Cooney leaves his mark on virtually every area of the Braves’ program.
The Assistant A.D. job title doesn’t come close to describing the job Cooney does for UWG. In his role as Treasurer and chief fund raiser for the Braves’ Booster Club, he has overseen record growth in the organization. Thanks to Cooney’s efforts, the Booster Club has annually enjoyed record growth in its level of support to the Braves’ program.
Beyond fund raising and operations, Cooney is also a valuable member of the Braves’ men’s basketball coaching staff. There, he excels as a strategist, motivator, and recruiter, all of which helped the Braves to a berth in the 2002 NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
A native of Spokane, Wash., Cooney, 40, graduated from Gonzaga University in 1983 with a degree in Finance. He completed an intern competency for a secondary math credential in 1990 from California State University-Dominguez Hills.
Cooney’s wife, Sherry, also serves as a valuable member of the UWG Athletics family. Last winter, she coached the Braves’ cheerleader squad to the UCA Division II National Championship. She is also the Webmaster for the Braves’ internet site, uwgbraves.com, and is responsible for extensive publications work through the UWG Sports Information Office.
The Cooneys have two daughters: Cailah, age six, and Samantha, age three.
