Braves blast Lady Hawks, 8-0

Carrollton, Ga. – September 17, 2005 – Wednesday’s match was unkind to the Braves. Despite the loss, West Georgia shot badly on the day, taking 45 shots while scoring just three goals. Saturday, the Braves rebounded, outracing Shorter 8-0 in the squad’s final warm-up before conference play starts next week.

Shizuka Tsuchiya, right, scored four goals in Saturday’s win.

Sophomore midfielder Alex Udin kicked things off for the Braves with a nice header off a corner kick from Samantah Jones just 1:29 into the match. It was Udin’s first goal of the season after being the team’s leading scorer in 2004.

The game stayed at 1-0 for the next 22 minutes before Shizuka Tsuchiya found the back of the net for her first goal as a Brave. The Tokyo, Japan native wasn’t done there, scoring three more goals in teh match to lead the Braves.

In all, five Braves scored on the day; Udin, Tsuchiya, Maz Sweeney, Margret Jonsdottir and Brittany Carr all found the back of the net on the afternoon.

For Carr, it was her third goal of the week after a pair of goals on Wednesday. She just missed a second goal against Shorter today, blasting one from 10 yards out, but the ball bounced off the post.

For the third straight game, the stifling UWG defense pitched a shutout, led by sweeper Katie Perea and keeper Lauren Camp. The Braves allowed just one shot for the second straight game, a long shot that sailed harmlessly to the right.

West Georgia moves to 6-2 on the season and opens up conference play next Friday at Christian Brothers at 8:00 p.m., EST.
