Carrollton, Ga. – August 27, 2005 – The first match of the year for West Georgia featured an outstanding individual effort. Saturday, facing a tougher opponent in Florida Southern, the Braves used a team effort to beat the Lady Mocs 4-1.
Sara Sohlberg was the hero of Thursday’s match, and she scored a goal in Saturday’s contst, but didn’t have to be all the offense. In fact, Chelsy Yarbrough took things into her own hands just over a minute into the match.
The freshman defender received a deflection close to 20 yards out from the goal and blasted a shot directly over keeper Sarah Plummer’s head. The goal was the first of Yarbrough’s career.
FSC scored on a nifty pass from Halie Clark to Becky McQuain at teh 17:14 point, tying the match at 1-1. But the tie was short lived, as a pass from Sohlberg to Erica Harvey ricocheted off of Florida Southern’s Amanda Walters and into the net for the Braves’ second score of the contest.
The score remained tied until the 62:33 mark in the second period, as freshman Samantha Jones’ corner kick found Stephanie Giles in the middle of a pack in front of the goal. The sophomore headed the ball straight into the goal for a commanding 3-1 lead for the Braves.
Sohlberg added an insurance goal off of a free-kick from Katie Perea six minutes later to close out the scoring.
Samantha Malone played her second straight match in goal and has now allowed just one goal in 180 minutes of action in the net.
Next up for the Braves is a match with Columbus State in Columbus next Friday at 5:00 p.m.
