Ed Murphy knew that he would be as good as the people he surrounds himself with– especially when it came to coaches. That is why he hired Michael Cooney to join him on the sidelines.

For the past nine seasons, Michael Cooney has been a multi-faceted contributor to West Georgia. He handles coaching, scouting, and recruiting duties during basketball season. Cooney has been actively involved in securing the Braves talent-laden recruiting classes each year. The remainder of the year is spent taking care of the Athletic Department’s fund raising unit, as well as, administrative tasks involved in helping run the Braves’ program as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Operations. In that capacity, he has led the Booster Club to nine straight record setting years–a major success story for the Braves.

Cooney came to West Georgia prior to the 1997-98 season. Before joining the Braves, he spent four years on the coaching staff at George Mason University in suburban Washington, D.C. Cooney also coached at the collegiate level at Morehead (KY) State and Loyola Marymount (CA). He also has high school coaching experience in California.

Cooney is the holder of a B.B.A. from Gonzaga University in his native Spokane, Washington. He also completed an internship competency program in Secondary Math through California State University in Dominguez Hills.

Cooney is married to Sherry, the Braves’ Head cheerleading coach. The Cooney’s have two daughters and a son, 10-year old Cailah, seven-year old Samantha and 18-month old Joe.
