Carrollton, Ga. – October 21, 2005 – With 3:40 gone in the first overtime of Friday’s match between West Georgia and Montevallo, the GSC postsesaon race became much more tight for the Braves as Adele Jackson’s free kick from near midfield spun off of UWG keeper Lauren Camp’s hands and into the net for a 3-2 Montevallo stunner.
Coming into the afternoon, the Braves were solidly in third place in the Gulf South Conference at 4-1-1 with Montevallo just behind at 4-3. The win for the Lady Falcons moves them to within a game of the Braves with just a week remaining on the schedule.
West Georgia came out solid, as Laura Walls scored of off Sara Sohlberg’s assist with just 1:28 gone in the contest. The score remained 1-0 until Walls lifted a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that went over UM keeper Corey Gros’s head, bounced off the post and into the net for a comfortable 2-0 lead with just over 40 minutes left in the contest.
But Montevallo came roaring back, as Paula Redmard scored an unassisted goal at the 57:10 mark, followed by a Stacey Balaam penalty kick goal in the 63rd minute to tie the match at 2-2.
The score remained there until Jackson’s floater ended the game in overtime.
The Braves’ offense went dormant against the UM defense, collecting just three shots-on-goal on the afternoon, the lowest output of the season. Walls’ goals give her three on the year.
