Carrollton, Ga. – October 14, 2005 – Friday was a tough match against a solid opponent, and the Saint Leo Lions proved to be too much for West Georgia, outlasting the Braves 2-1 in a region contest.
The Braves came into Friday ranked sixth in the South Region, followed by Saint Leo at seventh, making the match an important late-season contest.
The Lions struck first, with Casie Poyssick connecting for a goal in the 33rd minute. SLU then packed the defense in, hoping to ride out the storm.
Maz Sweeney made sure that wouldn’t happen, as her cross in the 69th minute sailed over keeper Lauren Hudson’s head, bounced off the far post, ricocheted back off of Hudson and into the net to tie the match a 1-1.
But 1:26 later, Saint Leo’s Amanda Cain found Poyssick in front of the UWG goal and Poyssick’s shot was true, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead.
The Braves had several chances in the final minutes of the game, but couldn’t find the net with several shots.
The teams were even on shots on the day at 13, and Sweeney’s goal was her seventh on the year.
The Braves host Montevllo next Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
