Camp named Defensive Player of the Week

Carrollton, Ga. – October 12, 2005 – The 2005 soccer season continues to move along, and West Georgia received its second GSC Player of the Week honor Tuesday when conference officials announced UWG keeper Lauren Camp as their defensive player of the week. The Braves also maintained their standing at fifth-place in the South Region Rankings, released today.

Camp was stellar on the weekend, but especially in Sunday afternoon’s contest at Lincoln Memorial, when she held the Lady Railsplitters to just one goal. LMU came into the contest as the second-ranked offense in the country.

The sophomore from Douglasville had never played keeper until this season, but was asked to play the role when head coach Gareth O’Sullivan needed someone to be in the net this year.

She was injured early in the practice season, missing the first two games of the year. Her return to the field was rocky, as the Braves lost her first two games in goal. But since then, West Georgia has gone 8-1-1 with Camp pitching four shutouts in the process.

Her goals against average is 1.31 is good for fifth in the conference this season and she has 21 saves in her six games in the Gulf South Conference.

The ranking in the South Region is the fifth straight week that the Braves have been ranked regionally. It is the second straight week that UWG has been tied for fifth-place with Central Arkansas.

West Florida maintained the top spot in the South, followed by Tampa in second. Lincoln Memorial and Barry are tied for third, with West Georgia and UCA tied for fifth.

Friday’s opponent, St. Leo, Lynn and North Alabama round out this week’s rankings.
