Florence, AL – October 11, 2005 – Two days after suffering their third loss of the season, the West Georgia Braves took out their frustrations on North Alabama in Florence, besting the Lions 5-2.
Tuesday night was a night of firsts, as three Braves scored their first goals of the 2005 season. Freshman Crystal Forde kicked things off with an unassisted goal seven minutes into the contest.
UNA tied the match just before halftime with a goal from Heather Smith, but Laura Walls took care of the tie in the 49th minute with her first goal of the season.
The Braves 2-1 lead stayed that way for the next 26 minutes, but the final 15 minutes of the contest would be crazy, starting with Afton Holm’s goal in the 75th minute to tied the match at 2-2.
Less than a minute later, Samantha Jones went unassisted with her second goal of the season, which ended up being the game-winner.
With just under seven minutes left, Maz Sweeney scored her sixth goal of the season to increase the lead to 4-2, then Donna Evans’ first goal of the year with a minute left closed out the scoring.
Lauren Camp, who earlier today was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Gulf South Conference, collected two saves on the night and allowed a pair of goals.
The Braves move to 10-3-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in the GSC while UNA falls to 7-6 and 3-3 on the year. West Georgia hosts region opponent St. Leo on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
