Pensacola, Fla. – November 4, 2005 – It has been a roller coaster ride this season for West Georgia soccer, but sadly it ended Friday afternoon as the Braves were ousted 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference tournament semifinal by top-seed and host West Florida.
The Lady Argos came in boasting an undefeated record and one of the more athletic teams West Georgia had seen all year long. The Braves held the powerful UWF offense in check for most of the game, but in the end, the athleticism was too much.
The game was a draw for the first 24 minutes of the contest, with neither team able to break through the opposing defense. But at the 24:29 mark, the ball bounced loose in the mouth of the UWG goal and came to a rest just at the post, but in play.
West Georgia keeper Lauren Camp and UWF forward Brianna Oeser raced to the ball. Oeser won the race by a half-a-step and the Lady Argos led 1-0.
The game remained a see-saw battle for the remainder, with the ball staying in the middle third of the field for most of the time. In the 86th minute, Audia Sullivan broke free down the left side and UWG defender Stephanie Giles collided with her in the box. The whistle blew and the referee signaled penalty kick. Sullivan snuck it past Camp for the final goal of the game.
