West Georgia coach, AD progressing well after surgery

Carrollton, GA – November 2, 2005 – With the start of a new basketball season only two weeks away, the West Georgia Braves are moving closer to getting their leader back on the bench.

Ed Murphy, UWG’s head coach and athletic director, reported Wednesday that he continues to recover well from last month’s lung surgery. The coach was released last week from Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital to continue his recuperation at home.

“I’m feeling good,” reported the coach Wednesday, following a morning walk. “The surgery was a complete success and I’m looking forward to getting back to the office in the next week-to-10 days.”

Murphy’s surgery was to remove a portion of his left lung. The operation followed a physical exam in which a cancerous lesion was discovered. The cancer was discovered in its earliest stages and was, according to Murphy, “100% operable.”

While away, Murphy has remained in contact with athletic department staff, including associate directors Mike Cooney and Gloria Laseter. Also, Cooney is serving as acting head coach of the men’s basketball team during its preseason practice.

West Georgia begins its basketball season, the 13th under Murphy, November 16 at home vs. Carver.
