Carrollton, Ga. – October 28, 2005 – West Georgia took a third-ranked West Florida team in the land as far as they would like to go Friday afternoon, but a goal by Cici Marrero with less than three minutes left in the game proved to be the difference as UWF downed the Braves 3-2.
The Braves out-shot the Lady Argos 19-12, including eight shots on goal. But it was West Florida that struck first in the contest, as Brandi Adams took a pass from Audia Sullivan and popped it over UWG keeper Lauren Camp’s head for the first goal of the contest at the 24:17 mark.
The score remained 1-0 until three minutes into the second half, when Mauricia Nicholson broke free in the UWG defense. She took one shot that deflected off of West Georgia defender Sam Malone, but the ball went straight back to Nicholson, who took another shot that found the back of the net for a 2-0 UWF lead.
West Georgia came storming back, with Sara Sohlberg scoring four minutes later off a brilliant through-ball from Maz Sweeney.
Brittany Carr scored in the 73rd minute on an assist from Sohlberg to tie the game at two. Everything was pointing towards a tie before the corner from Adams found Marrero in the middle of a pile for the game winner.
West Georgia must now beat Ouachita Baptist tomorrow evening in Memphis, TN in order to make the Gulf South Conference tournament next week.
