UWG sixth at AFLAC/Cougar Invitational

Columbus, GA – October 4, 2005 – Monday was an down-and-up day for the UWG men’s golf team, but it ended well as the Braves finished Day 1 of the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational in sixth place.

“Considering the field that includes the top two teams in the nation, I’m very pleased with our first day,” said head coach Jeff King. “I wasn’t very happy with our first round, but I couldn’t be more proud of our second round.”

The top two teams in the invitational through two rounds are USC-Aiken and Armstrong Atlantic State, Nos. one and two in the nation in Division II golf. Aiken is pounding away with a score of 6-under, 12 strokes ahead of AASU at 6-over. Pfeiffer and West Florida are tied at 12-over, followed by Georgia College and State University at 13-over.

The Braves shot a 13-over 297 in the opening round as a team, but came back strong in the second round, shooting a 1-over 285 for their sixth place standing.

West Georgia’s Brandon Bennett, the 2004-05 Gulf South Conference freshman of the year, is tied for third at 1-under for the tourney thus far. He is seven strokes behind leader Andrew Workman from Armstrong Atlantic State and six strokes behind second place Scott Brown of USC-Aiken.

The Invitational finishes up today with the final round.
